The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has expressed deep concern over the deteriorating human rights situation in Tibet, particularly the increasing restrictions on the Tibetan people’s freedom of religion.
During the opening of the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Türk addressed a range of urgent human rights issues around the world, including armed conflicts, restrictions on civic space, and discrimination against vulnerable and minority communities. In a significant reference to Tibet, the High Commissioner stated that “the increasing restrictions on the rights of the Tibetan people, including their freedom of religion, are deeply concerning.” He called for an urgent change in these policies.
The statement comes amid continued concerns over restrictions on religious and cultural rights in Tibet. Tibetan Buddhist communities and institutions are facing increasing state control, while religious practices and cultural expression are being subjected to ever tighter regulation.
Türk’s remarks are particularly significant because they bring the situation in Tibet clearly to the attention of the UN Human Rights Council. His statement underscores that freedom of religion and the right to cultural identity are fundamental human rights that must be respected and protected.
The High Commissioner also stressed that human rights must remain at the heart of international cooperation, accountability, and efforts to achieve lasting peace.
