Dalai Lama wins his first Grammy Award at age 90

On 2 February 2026, the Dalai Lama won a Grammy Award at the age of 90 in the category Best Audio Book, Narration & Storytelling Recording. The award-winning album, Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, combines his spiritual teachings with music by renowned artists and aims to spread messages of peace and compassion to a global audience.

“I receive this recognition with gratitude and humility. I don’t see it as something personal, but as a recognition of our shared universal responsibility. I truly believe that peace, compassion, care for our environment, and an understanding of the oneness of humanity are essential for the collective well-being of all eight billion human beings. I’m grateful that this Grammy recognition can help spread these messages more widely.”

About the Dalai Lama’s album

Meditations was released in August 2025, shortly after the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday, and marks a period of deep reflection on his life and legacy. Due to his advanced age and limited travel, he was not present at the ceremony himself, but his office warmly welcomed the recognition.

According to those involved in the project, both the nomination and the eventual win were seen less as a personal honor and more as an opportunity to pass on his message to younger generations around the world.

Nearly forty years after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, this Grammy win represents an unexpected yet meaningful new chapter in the Dalai Lama’s extraordinary life journey.
