Volgens China is de COVID-19 pandemie de reden voor de annulering van het festival.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Shoton, of het &#8220;yoghurtfestival&#8221;, dat op 8 augustus 2021 zou beginnen, is een van de belangrijkste religieus-culturele festivals in de Tibetaanse hoofdstad Lhasa. Het omvat monastieke ceremonies met een &#8220;thangka&#8221; (Tibetaanse religieuze schildering)\u00a0en een Tibetaanse traditionele operavoorstelling in de tuin van de Norbulingka, de zomerresidentie van de Dalai Lama&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>De Chinese autoriteiten presenteren dit festival tegenwoordig als onderdeel van hun claim om de Tibetaanse cultuur te promoten. Het festival wordt echter ook gebruikt om hun politieke agenda te promoten. Zo was het festival dit jaar neergezet als een onderdeel van de viering van de 70e verjaardag van wat China de vreedzame bevrijding van Tibet noemt, maar wat eigenlijk een gewelddadige annexatie was. In 2011 was het thema van het festival: <em>&#8220;Het geluk begiftigde Lhasa, het allesomvattende Shoton&#8221;<\/em> en in 2014 was het thema van het festival <em>&#8220;Mooi huis, gelukkig Lhasa&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In een toespraak op 5 augustus 2021 heeft de task force voor de bestrijding van de pandemie verklaard dat wegens de toename van het aantal COVID-gevallen in 17 Chinese provincies en steden, alle openbare evenementen in het kader van het Shoton-festival worden stopgezet. Met deze maatregelen hoopt China de activiteiten die verband houden met de herdenking van de 70e verjaardag van de vreedzame bevrijding van Tibet te beschermen, als mede het welzijn van alle mensen in de stad.<\/p>\n<p>Ook vorig jaar hebben de autoriteiten de programma&#8217;s in verband met het Shoton-festival beperkt vanwege de COVID-situatie.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>De Chinese autoriteiten in Lhasa (de hoofdstad van Tibet) hebben aangekondigd dat alle activiteiten in verband met het jaarlijkse &#8220;Shoton&#8221;-festival worden geannuleerd.
