We rouwen om degenen die op die dag stierven en herinneren ons het lijden van de gewonden, gearresteerden en gemartelden, evenals hun families.<\/p>\n<p>De gebeurtenissen van 4 juni 1989 herinneren ons eraan dat de opmars van de geschiedenis naar vrijheid en rechtvaardigheid lange en duistere omwegen kan nemen. De burgerlijke vrijheden van het Chinese volk zijn vandaag de dag waarschijnlijk slechter af dan in 1989, gezien de technologische onderdrukkingsinstrumenten die de Chinese overheid venijnig gebruikt. Maar we zijn ervan overtuigd dat vrijheid en rechtvaardigheid zullen prevaleren voor de 1,4 miljard mensen, van vele nationaliteiten, binnen de Volksrepubliek China.<\/p>\n<p>Vandaag zien we de aanval van de Chinese regering op de mensenrechten en de burgerlijke vrijheden meer dan ooit en op alle niveaus de Chinese samenleving doordringen, met als doel deze uit te breiden tot buiten de grenzen van China. Van het zwijgen opleggen van alle critici van de Chinese president Xi Jinping, tot de massale opsluiting van Oeigoeren voor &#8220;heropvoeding&#8221;, het onderdrukken van nu ernstig bedreigde vrije stemmen en instellingen in Hong Kong, tot het criminaliseren van bijna elke vorm van expressie van identiteit door Tibetanen die onder constant toezicht leven, zet Peking een ongekende standaard voor repressie in de 21e eeuw. Bovendien breidt het zijn bereik uit door buitenlandse bedrijven en ambtenaren te bedreigen die zijn autoritaire systeem in twijfel trekken. De opkomst van China in de wereld is duidelijk niet vreedzaam, en de promotie van zijn dictatoriale systeem stopt niet tenzij het serieus in twijfel wordt getrokken en tegengewerkt wordt.<\/p>\n<p>Verandering in China en Tibet komt uiteindelijk van binnenuit. Ondanks offici\u00eble inspanningen om het te onderdrukken, is het verlangen naar democratische rechten van burgers in de Volksrepubliek China (VRC) vandaag niet minder dan in 1989. Democratisering blijft de essenti\u00eble weg naar een vrij China en een vrij Tibet. De democratie\u00ebn in de wereld zouden alle inspanningen van mensen in de VRC om hun fundamentele democratische vrijheden uit te oefenen, nieuw leven moeten inblazen.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>ICT president statement on 31st anniversary of Tiananmen Massacre<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Statement by Matteo Mecacci, president of the International Campaign for Tibet:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn behalf of the International Campaign for Tibet, I express solidarity with the Chinese people on the 31st anniversary of the massacre in Tiananmen Square. We mourn those who died that day and remember the suffering of those injured, arrested and tortured, as well as their families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe events of June 4, 1989 remind us that the march of history toward freedom and justice can take long and dark detours. The civil liberties of the Chinese people are arguably worse off today than in 1989, given the technological tools of repression vigorously employed by the Chinese party-state. But we firmly believe that freedom and justice will prevail for the 1.4 billion people, of many nationalities, within the People\u2019s Republic of China.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, we see the Chinese government\u2019s assault on human rights and civil liberties pervade Chinese society more than ever and at all levels, with the goal of extending it beyond China\u2019s borders. From the silencing of all critics of Chinese President Xi Jinping, to the mass incarceration of Uyghurs for \u201cre-education,\u201d to the stifling of now seriously endangered free voices and institutions in Hong Kong, to the criminalization of almost any form of expression of identity by Tibetans who live under constant surveillance, Beijing is setting an unprecedented standard for repression in the 21st Century. On top of that, it is extending its reach by threatening foreign companies and officials who question its authoritarian system. China\u2019s rise in the world is clearly not peaceful, and the promotion of its dictatorial system won\u2019t stop unless it is seriously questioned and opposed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChange in China and Tibet will ultimately come from within. Despite official efforts to repress it, the yearning for democratic rights of citizens in the PRC is no less today than it was in 1989. Democratization remains the essential pathway to a free China and a free Tibet.
