European Parliament’s Tibet Inter-Parliamentary group condemns mass arrests in Tibet

The Inter-Parliamentary Group for Tibet in the European Parliament has expressed serious concern over the mass arrest of around 80 Tibetans and a communications blackout following a peaceful protest against illegal gold mining in Kashi, eastern Tibet.

The group condemns the criminalization of peaceful environmental protest as a violation of fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly. It calls on Chinese authorities to de-escalate the situation, release all peaceful demonstrators, and refrain from repressive measures. The group also requests an independent and transparent investigation into the heavy-handed response and stresses the importance of consulting the affected communities.

The Inter-Parliamentary Group reiterates its concerns about the human rights situation in Tibet and expresses its solidarity with the Tibetan people.
